8 pathfinders for change in the spotlight

There are citizens, associations and schools all over the world who are carrying out exceptional projects to educate and raise awareness of sustainable development. They all share the same ambition: to build a better future.

With 8 emblematic projects, the UNESCO Green Citizens exhibit presents to the world the majestic challenges that men and women are able to set for themselves when they become citizens of the world.

The projects selected by UNESCO include our "Great Green Wall" initiative. For our teams and partners, this is an incredible acknowledgement of our commitment to preserving biodiversity!


Senegal - A "Great Green Wall" to combat desertification in the Sahel

To fight the desertification currently affecting the Sahel and its consequences for the local people, 11 African countries have come together to build a " Great Green Wall ". This green belt will cut across the African continent from Dakar to Djibouti, helping restore plant cover. In Senegal, 70,000 desert date trees have been planted.

India - Bringing autonomy to local communities while preserving natural heritage

The Adivasi, the indigenous peoples of India, have developed a tea plantation which allows them to keep their ancestral land. The initiative brought about the need to build a school and local hospital for the community.

France - Committing to sustainable fishing in Brittany

Scallop fishing in Brittany was threatened by over-harvesting and climate change. The fishermen thus mobilized to protect this biodiversity and save their ancestral expertise by placing certain restrictions on themselves. Their children are also taught about the importance of sustainable fishing through various actions.

United States - Restoring the coast of the Gulf of Mexico (Mississippi)

Over the last decade, the region has been hit with multiple natural and human catastrophes. This initiative was launched to repair and revive the local ecosystems while educating and training young people from disadvantaged environments in aquatic resource management.

Egypt - The Egyptian recycling school

With UNESCO's help, Ezzat founded the Recycling School, which provides children with the necessary educational foundations, sanitary recommendations and practical training to turn recycling into a proper trade. A good way to transform complex processes into a vocation with high social value.

Nicaragua - Promoting and sharing indigenous knowledge

The Mayangna have developed a complex, in-depth understanding of the local flora and fauna, and have shaped the region's ecosystem through their cultural practices. This project aims to record and preserve their knowledge and world views.

Japon - Using rice cultivation to optimize environmental protection

As part of the "ESD Rice Project" program, a farmer opens the doors of his rice fields to the region's schools. The children participate in various activities to discover the local flora and fauna and increase their awareness of the issue of their protection, using rice as an example.

Brazil - Growing Cupuaçu to protect biodiversity

In the state of Pará, two Amazonian communities work towards a sustainable future by growing Cupuaçu, a small tree in the Cacao family. Agroforestry techniques and the sustainable use of Cupuaçu fruit (beans, pulp, etc.) are shared by the more knowledgeable community to improve families' daily lives. 

Morocco - Preserving natural and cultural heritage 

Listed as Moroccan national heritage since 1929, the palm grove of Marrakesh is the subject of a preservation plan spearheaded by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection. This program involves local populations in protecting the palm grove through irrigation, replanting and maintenance activities while enhancing farmers' training.

Portugal – Wolves and people: towards a new balance to restore biodiversity

In the northern part of the country, the Iberian wolf is a species threatened by the significant shrinkage of its natural hunting grounds. The restoration of biodiversity is a key element in enabling the wolf to feed on wild prey. Educational actions and awareness programs have been developed to restore balance and relieve tension.
